Today morning, I came across an article where it was mentioned that Gujarat plans to introduce chapter on Dhirubhai Ambani in school books and what are our views.

I could just click the Like button on the story and give my comment as a definitive YES and move on. But when it comes to Dhirubhai Ambani, it calls for me to share how Dhirubhai inspired and changed our life – my brother and mine.

In our growing up years, Dhirubhai Ambani was a frequently used example, which our parents quoted to inspire us to establish our own business.

Dhirubhai Ambani’s stories were always on our mind but on 6 July 2002, the day when Dhirubhai passed away I suddenly experienced a hunger to find out more about him. I searched for books on him in all the possible book stores in Noida and Delhi. I even went to roadside book sellers on Janpath in Connaught Place to see if they had any local magazines covering his stories but it was to no avail.

Finally one day, seeing me come into the Galgotia book store very often in Noida Sector 18, a salesman told me that since Dhirubhai had passed away recently, the kind of content I wanted to read about him would take time to reach the market but he had something, which might interest me.

I wanted to know what Dhirubhai’s initial dreams were and how he started out to accomplish them. The salesman handed me a copy of “Business Maharajas by Geeta Piramal”. The book covered many business houses of India. Dhirubhai’s and the Reliance story was a part of the book but what all I wanted to know about Dhirubhai, it was right there.

It’s been twelve years that I have this book and each time I read it, I derive new inspiration from Dhirubhai’s story. Over years, the inspiration turned many of our dreams into reality and not just that, year 2013, we experienced the real power of dreams.

What was it, if not a sign from the universe that we should continue to dream – the day we finalized the deal for the location of our business, we realized we were standing next to the Reliance Footprints store, which is an offspring of the dreams of our mentor – Dhirubhai Ambani.

Dhirubhai Ambani – Our mentor? Yes, he is our mentor. How?

Sid and I entered an interesting pact with each other to achieve our dreams but the credit to turn our dreams into reality goes to our mentors Richard Branson, Dhirubhai Ambani, Giorgio Armani, Paulo Coelho and Harivansh Rai Bachchan.

But how is it possible to have such mentors?

“Even though we did not have any personal relationship with them, we read books and made them part of our life. Any situation we faced, we found them around talking to us.”

Your mentors can not reach you and make you part of their life but you can have as many mentors and make all of them part of your life. – Quote from the book My Fantastic Failures

Mentors play a very important role in our journey of life – personal and professional. They become a guiding light and enable us to find our answers within. Just like Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt) got his answers from Mahatma Gandhi in the movie Munna Bhai MBBS.

We are grateful to all our mentors for sharing their inspirational lives with their great work thus giving us an opportunity to get inspired and motivated. We wish that you all also reach out, find your mentors and make them part of your life.

Why we need mentors, especially for this generation in India?

India is at the helm of development activities. The world is watching us. It is being discussed in the global forums that ‘India is the bright spot’, ‘India can become one of the world’s most dynamic economies.’ etc. So it is time that we steer through the challenges, leverage enormous entrepreneurship opportunities and let the world witness India emerge as a mighty player in global arena.

#MakeInIndia and similar initiatives have already been put in place and we have introduced them to the world. Amidst this let’s wake up to the reality that we need many entrepreneurs in times to come. So rather than looking for job outside, let us become job creators. And let’s get there quick. For this find mentors. And what better than it that we start finding our mentors right away in our schools.

Let’s inspire and get inspired.
